For nearly a decade, Eminem’s personal life has been an open book.
In songs like “Stan,” ” ‘97 Bonnie and Clyde,” “Brain Damage” and “Kim,” the blond MC provided brief glimpses of his troubled upbringing, his turbulent relationship with twice-ex-wife Kim Mathers and the pressures of fame.
But in his new memoir, “The Way I Am,” Em — who has been nearly invisible for the past two years as he dealt with a stint in rehab for a sleeping-pill dependency, a remarriage and re-divorce from Kim and the murder of his best friend, D12 rapper Proof — aims to pull back the curtain even more. He paints himself as a regular suburban dad … who just happens to be one of the biggest rap stars of the modern era.
Written with journalist Sacha Jenkins, the book mixes autobiography with photos and scraps of songs, poems and other collectibles from Em’s life for an unusually candid bit of sharing for a rapper who has been happy to let it blurt in his rhymes but has kept his personal life more closely guarded outside of the recording booth.
“In a way, this is the end of the first chapter of his career,” longtime manager Paul Rosenberg said in an interview with The New York Times about the book. “Em’s looking forward now. He’s very re-energized and refocused.”
Em told the paper that he originally intended the project to be a “scrapbook for my fans,” but as he sat down to compile it, big chunks of first-person narratives began to form from interviews with Jenkins. “Rap is one big Fantasy Island,” Eminem, 36, writes in the book. “It’s the place I always retreat to when things get too hectic in real time.”
When he’s not recording and touring, Em is busy raising his daughter with Kim, Hailie, as well as a niece, Alaina, and Kim’s daughter from another relationship, Whitney. He writes that his chaotic life is not surprising given his difficult upbringing, which estranged mother, Debbie Nelson, chronicles in her own upcoming book, “My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem.”
“If you go back and look at the abuse that I took, it’s no surprise I became who I am,” Em writes of being bullied as a child. “Someone I don’t really want to be.” Calling his voice very “natural” and saying he has an “everyman” appeal, Jenkins paints Em as somewhat of a lone wolf lately, one who had a lot to get off his chest, especially about the shooting death of Proof in a Detroit bar in 2006.
“As difficult as it was to talk about, I had to,” Eminem told the paper, which described the passages about Proof as among the most vivid in the book, including the ones in which Em explains why he pulled back after his friend’s death. “After he passed, it was a year before I could really do anything normally again. It was tough for me to even get out of listen music free and I had days when I couldn’t walk, let alone write a rhyme. When I tried to put my thoughts together — well, I wasn’t making sense when I spoke, so everyone was trying to keep me off TV and away from the press.”
The one topic Em doesn’t discuss in the book is his mother, with whom he’s battled publicly over the years. “Everyone already knows how I feel about those situations,” Eminem said, explaining that the book is “more about Eminem and less about Marshall,” referring to his given name. “I don’t want to keep putting Kim and the kids in everything that I do, stuff where it’s not necessary.”
The book also features more than two dozen examples of handwritten lyrics jotted on everything from spiral notebooks to hotel memo pads that served as the kernel of songs such as “My Name Is” and “Stan.”
One of the most entertaining stories in the book is the tall tale of how the MC got his signature bleach-blond look, which came about one night while he was high on two hits of the drug ecstasy and took a trip to a drugstore and purchased a bottle of peroxide. “I wasn’t thinking that the peroxide thing was going to be my look,” he writes. “I was just being stupid on drugs.” Fittingly, he also talks about how the Slim Shady character was invented in a flash of inspiration while sitting on the toilet.

In testimony for Lil Wayne’s gun-possession case on Monday in New York, the rapper’s assistant, Terry Bourgeois, said he “occasionally” saw a handgun and people smoking pot on Weezy’s tour bus.
According to The Associated Press, Bourgeois also said he never saw Wayne (born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.) with a gun and didn’t know if one was on the bus in July 2007, when the 26-year-old rapper was arrested in Manhattan on gun charges following his first headlining concert in New York at the Beacon Theatre.
Wayne’s lawyer, Stacey Richman, has asked for the charges to be dismissed, saying police falsely claimed they smelled marijuana in order to illegally board the bus. A police officer testified last month that she boarded the bus after smelling marijuana and saw Wayne trying to hide a gun. Wayne has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is free on $70,000 bail. He faces up to three and a half years in prison if convicted in the case.
Richman has said that the gun was registered to Wayne’s manager, Cortez Bryant. Newsday reported that one of the men hired to provide security for the rapper, Derrick Parker of Styles Security, has testified that when he saw Wayne and his entourage leave the Beacon, board the bus and drive off, he didn’t see or smell any marijuana smoke leaving the bus.

It almost feels like you have to have an official “T.I. Watch.” Every show this guy has done since Paper Trail dropped has been an event.
He’s brought out Jay-Z, Lupe Fiasco, Rihanna and Kanye West, and last night, a very pregnant M.I.A. helped him tear down Brooklyn on “Swagger Like Us.”
“Man, I don’t really know how to explain it,” said DJ Drama, Tip’s resident turntablist. “Blessings are coming — rightfully so. Even [Sunday] night, Tip said to me, ‘If M.I.A. doesn’t do the song tonight, we can’t do that song. The song is too big. It’s an event.’ To have that song on your roster, to come out with an album and the shows we’ve been doing, it’s powerful. It’s a lot of statements. It shows where he is in his career.”
Just like he was last year, and the year before that and the year before that, Tip is at the pinnacle. The King of the South seems to reach new professional milestones each year. There are great debates going on across the country about whether Paper Trail is his best album yet. Artistically, it’s certainly up there with his most classic material, and last week, the album posted his biggest first-week sales ever. DJ Drama says Paper Trail is to T.I. what The Blueprint was to Jay-Z.
“Clearly, I think it’s good management, and everybody is playing their part for Tip to be able to work on a movie ['Bone Deep'], put the album out and do these shows and still finish up his other obligations,” Dram said. “On the other aspect, on the off day we had in New York, he spent it with his kids, taking them to the movies and to the pier. We also been doing ‘[The] Tyra Banks [Show]‘ and ‘The View.’ He’s steady showing his place. Showing the hats he wears. If he’s tired, I can’t tell. But he’s still a pretty young guy. He can handle it. It’ll be fine.”
As far as pulling off these big-name guest appearances, the M.I.A. collaboration was an 11th-hour decision. Other onstage love fests, like Kanye West’s and Rihanna’s surprise appearances a couple of weeks ago in L.A., are planned out a day or two in advance. Kanye didn’t confirm until about an hour and half before the show, because he was working on 808s and Heartbreak and flying in from Hawaii. The New York show on September 30 — the day Paper Trail was released — with Jay-Z, Swizz Beatz and Lupe Fiasco was plotted more in advance. It’s NYC — you know you have to be big regardless. Jigga did throw a little audible in the mix, switching up the order on “Swagger Like Us.”
“I didn’t have the instrumental to ‘Swagger,’ ” Drama said. “I got the instrumental from Green Lantern the day of the show. It was so good that I got it, because I went up to Jay to go talk to him about coming out. He was like, ‘Let Tip go first, and I’ll go second.’ So really, Tip rocked on where Kanye’s part was. Then Jay came out. Me having the instrumental enabled me to set up for that. With Kanye, I was in the dressing room when they said, ‘We need “Love Lockdown.” ‘ [Kanye's camp members] Plain Pat and Don C came and gave me the new song ‘Heartless.’ Just little things, doing that. It’s fun for me being back in this position with a new album, because you got a lot of new songs to perform and putting them in the right place and fitting them in [the show].”
